In the venturi scrubber, the gases are passed through a venturi tube to which low-pressure water is added at the throat. Gas velocities at the throat are from 15, 000 to 20, 000 fpm, and pressure drops are from 10 to 30 inches water gage.

Recirculation of water is feasible. The predominating mechanism is believed to be impaction. In spite of the relatively short contact time, the extreme turbulence in the venturi promotes very intimate contact. The wetted particles and droplets are collected in a cyclone spray separator.

Very high collection efficiencies have been reported for very fine dusts.
